From 1985 to 1989: versions Ferrari 328

Chassis number between 58735 and 83017 for GTB (with a development car before, 56211). Chassis number between 59301 and 83136 for GTS (with one, perhaps two, development cars before, 58687 and possibly 59105). In 1985, Ferrari introduce the 328 at the Frankfurt show. New front radiator grille, body coloured fiberglass bumpers, black painted rocker panels, door release handle embedded in the door. Larger front hood vents and grill for hot air exit, deletion of the hot air vents behind each headlight pods. Hot air exit grill on the engine hood is «U» shaped on all 328s (no difference between markets). Round indicator repetitor behind the front wheel arch. New design for the «pancake» spare wheel with 5 spokes.

1- Engines:

The 328 has an evolution of the 90° V8 engine, with an increase in capacity to 194.36 cu/in (F105C: 270 bhp at 7000 rpm and 223 ft/lbs of torque at 5500 rpm) through a bore augmented to 83mm (against 81mm for the 308) and a 73.6mm stroke (against 71mm for the 308). Compression ratio is higher also, from 9.2:1 to 9.8:1. Other changes are made: different camshafts, different cylinder heads, Microplex ignition and a bigger oil cooler. Steering rack is the same as the one of the Ferrari 288 GTO.

U.S.A., Japan, Australia: engine F105C type 040: 260 bhp at 7 000 rpm (SAE net), torque 213,5 ft/lbs at 5 500 rpm, compression ratio 9.2:1. Catalyst, black cover on the K-Jetronic with oxygen sensor and a warm-up regulator. Fitting a catalytic convertor moves the oil cooler in front of the coils on a higher bracket to the left of the engine. Different gearbox ratios.

Swiss, Sweden from spring 1987: the Eruopean standard engine becomes engine F105C type 046 with catalyst, 255 bhp at 6 750 rpm (SAE net), torque of 202 ft/lbs at 5 500 rpm, compression ratio 9,2:1. Beginning of 1988, introduction of KE3-Jetronic with oxygen sensor and a pressure regulator. Different gearbox ratios.

2- Interiors:

New console, new seat design and a pocket with snap flap behind the passenger seat, new door handles, new orange colour for instrument panel lettering, change of the handbrake position (besides the driver’s seat, door side). Gear knob numbers in orange. Fuel, oil temperature gauges and clock are mounted in a small console above the radio drawer. New speakers (twitters) at both dashboard ends and new electric mirror control knob. New design of the fuse box cover carrying the model badge.

3- Options:

Factory options: - Air Conditioning (standard on US version). - Boxer paint scheme. - Metallic paint. - Heated rear window (standard on US version). - Roof spoiler, black (paint for GTB and textured for GTS) or body colour (except on US cars, all delivered with the black spoiler).

- Schedoni Luggage set (4 pieces) in leather, two different sets available, one for non-catalyzed cars (the handles of the two small cases fold like a pantograph, the shoe case stands vertically); the other one for catalyzed cars (the handles of the two small cases fold lying on their side, the shoe case lies horizontally on its side). The cases of the set for catalyzed cars are of different dimensions: shorter in height, as the trunk is less deep due to the catalysator; the two large flat cases are also slightly shorter in length, but the «vanity case» is wider: the shoe case lies on its side, not on its bottom. The luggage sets were generally dark red-brown for the non-catalysed cars’ set, and honey/fawn for the catalyzed cars’ set, although difference did occur. The two sets were also available in black. On special order, individual sets could be made in any other colour (we know of a crema set, and a dark red set for instance).

- Extended leather on rear window surround and leather headliner.

- Leather dashboard.

- ABS during 1988 from chassis N° 76626 (except for US version: MY 1988 cars all without ABS (so called «88 1/2») all MY 1989 with ABS).

Dealer options: The brand and model of the head unit are differ according to the import market. These were fitted by the dealership, so we might find Blaupunkt Köln SQR-23, some Bremen SQR-46 or Montreux RDR-49 in Europe, from 1985 to 1989. Pioneer head Units might also be found, either the KEH-5060 (with a small «Cavallino rampante» badge) or the KEH 9080, but for Right Hand Drive cars. In the United States, from 1985 to 1987, we might find, among others, the Blaupunkt Toronto SQR-45, New-York SQR-05, Tucson SQR-06 or Lexington SQR-46. Then later, the Blaupunkt Atlanta SQR-47, Portland SQR-28, des Toronto SQR-48 or the CD unit SCD-09. Alpine head Units were also fitted, either the 7163, 7256 or 7287, from 1985 through 1989. Late Australian delivery cars received the CD player Pionner DEH-66.

4- Differences between export standards:

- US 328 have longer front bumper, body reinforcements, rear bumper with hot air extraction vent at the top, just behind the license plate for the catalytic converter and specific design of the front compartment (double latch attachment for the hood), the spare wheel is a standard front wheel until January, 1986 where the slim silver Euro spare wheel was introduced. Later in February, 1987, the silver spare wheel change to a smoky grey tone. The rear apron does not have any rear fog light and the tailpipes protrude less than on the European versions. In fact, the muffler is of a different shape fitted further rearwards than on «non catalysed cars» due to the catalytic converter. Roof spoiler is always black, never body colour. US models have a strap in the trunk to hold the jack bag and tool kit. Large rectangular side markers repetitors lights on the front fenders and rectangular side marker lights on the rear fenders. The upper part of the front turn signal and fog light is all orange. There is a third brake light under the upper arch in the center of the rear window. «Flags» mirrors with the introduction of the badge «Cavallino rampante» badge on those from chassis 75929. Speedometer calibrated in MPH up to 180. Large hand-brake and break failure warning light on the rev counter. Additional warning lights on the dashboard for «Seat belt», defroster which is not an option but a standard delivery and front fog light located on the bottom left corner; «Slow Down» warning light is located on the center right of the top row. Then, during summer 1987, the «Slow Down'» indicator is switched with the front fog light. With the introduction of the ABS system in October, 1988, the ABS indicator is on the center upper left of the row, the defroster light takes place on the tight bottom place of the speedometer instead of the right turn signal. Both turn signals are now on the same indicator light on the bottom right of the speedometer. The typography of the ABS indicator logo change in January, 1989.

- Australian 328: short front bumper like European model, rear bumper with hot air vent at the top behind the license plate for the catalytic converter. The rear apron does not have any rear fog light and the tailpipes protrude less than on the European versions, in fact, the muffler is of a different shape and fitted further rearwards than on «non-catalysed cars» due to the catalytic converter. Specific design of the front compartment fitting a standard size spare wheel. Small circular side markers repeaters lights on the front fenders behind the wheel arch like European model and «Flags» mirrors. Dashboard is the same as European model with 6 small indicator lights (4 in the upper row), speedometer calibrated in KmH and gauge calibrated in Degrees. Rev counter are the US model with large hand-brake and break failure warning light. «Slow Down» warning light on the bottom left corner and front fog light is located in the upper center left side. - Swiss and Swedish 328: Standard European model until spring 1987, then the model become specific, as it is now catalyzed, but with a different KE-Jetronic (KE3-Jetronic) than the one of the US cars. On the Swiss versions, a thermal insulation is placed under the engine lid. Model keeps the short front bumper, but is fitted with the rear bumper with hot air vent at the top behind the license plate for the catalytic converter. The rear apron does have the rear the catalytic converter. fog lights and the tailpipes protrude less than the European versions, as the muffler is of a different shape and fitted further rearwards than on «non-catalysed» cars due to Specific design of the front compartment fitting a standard size spare wheel. Small circular side indicator repetitors lights on the front fenders behind the wheel arch and mirrors like European model. Swedish cars receive headlight washer nozzles. Dashboard is the European model. «Slow Down» warning light on the bottom left corner and when option is taken, ABS indicator is on the top row center left instead of a yellow light without attribution.

- Middle East 328: longer front bumper as on USA cars, rear bumper with hot air vent exit at the top behind the license plate as for catalyzed cars, but «Middle East» version is not fitted with a catalytic converter (this model has the standard European engine, but with the oil cooler located upwards, forwards and on a bracket like on the US model). The rear apron does not have any rear fog light and the tailpipes protrude less than on the European versions. Specific design of the front compartment (double latch attachment for the hood) standard size spare wheel. Small circular indicator repetitor lights on the front fenders behind the wheel arch like European model and «flags» mirrors. The upper part of the front turn signal and fog light is all orange and white like European model. Dashboard is the same as European model with 6 small indicator lights (4 in the upper row), speedometer calibrated in KmH and gauge calibrated in Degrees. Rev counter are the US model with large hand-brake and break failure warning light. «Seat belt» warning light on the bottom left corner. - Japanese 328: longer front bumper, rear bumper with hot air vent exit at its top, under the license plate recess, for the catalytic converter. The rear apron does not have any rear fog light and the tailpipes protrude less than the European versions, in fact, the muffler has a different shape and is fitted more rearwards due to the catalytic converter. Specific design of the front compartment (double latch attachment for the hood). Small circular indicator repetitor lights on the front fenders, behind the wheel arch and rear-view mirrors like European model. The upper part of the front turn signal and fog light is all orange and white like European model. Dashboard is the US model with 8 small indicator lights (6 in the upper row), speedometer calibrated in KmH and gauge calibrated in Degrees. Rev counter is the US model with large hand-brake and break failure warning light. «Slow Down» warning light on the bottom left and defroster as standard equipment has an indicator light at the center takes place on the top row center. There is no front fog light indicator like on the US model, a yellow indicator replaces it. - English 328: Front fog lights are standard delivery. The indicator is on the bottom left of the dashboard.
